With the whole ex member thing always being kind of hit and miss, you can absolutely be assured that this puppy is 100% on the hit end of the 'ol rock-ometer. The first time I heard this epic masterpiece, I was just floored. Sheer frantic raw rock n roll energy captured live to 4 track. On this S/T debut, the KNOCKOUT PILLS check in with 13 fantastic reverb drenched cuts of garage punk pleasure. Running the gamut from the more laid back, sedate pop prone rippers like Reject Button, Here Comes the Legend and Divine Distraction to the hyper thrash-o-phonic blast fest in songs like Sassy Sue and Trust Fund Rock, the KNOCKOUT PILLS never let up. These AZ humidity heathens have gone above and beyond the call of duty to create the perfect debut in no less than 13 stellar trax. A debut, I might add, that will be hard to surpass. And isn't that what the dreaded debut game is all about? While some of the songs may be a bit more stylistically diverse than your typical garage or rock n roll album, the KNOCKOUT PILLS have sculpted what is called 'a sound'. They have a distinct sound which, if you are in a band, is holistically what you are trying to achieve. Yes, you can hear certain aspects of other great bands like Radio Birdman, the Kids, Saints, Teengenerate, Pagans etc. in their wall of guitars speed fest. But in the end the KNOCKOUT PILLS create something absolutely ORIGINAL, something completely SPECIAL, something tastefully THEIRS! This KNOCKOUT PILLS- S/T LP/CD was recorded entirely on 4 track, but don't worry about that lo-fi all guitar, hiss and treble migraine inducer. It ain't here. You will be as amazed, as I was, when you hear this puppy for the first time. You can actually hear all the instruments PERFECTLY, unlike so many ill fated 4 track sessions. The KNOCKOUT PILLS must have studied the same Tascam manuals as the Bell Rays who have made a career of this perfectly crafted lo-fi recording approach. If done right, the results are sheer musical bliss, and this S/T debut can be seen as the pinnacle of this rather tricky, finicky recording style.
