Well at the time, I had a hand full of projects in the can, and no resources to commit to anything else. So I never initially persued the band. Instead, I put the SONS OF CYRUS on the ‘watch out for’ list and didn’t hear from them until a year later when I saw a few favorable reviews of their debut ‘S/T’ LP/CD. I saw the album was released on a newer label called Big Brothel Records also out of Sweden and immediately contacted the label to check out the album. Well Big Brothel informed me that not only did they release the album, but also re-released the ‘Warriors” Ep AND put out their second single called ‘A Lonesome Boy’. Well I snatched up copies of the two I didn’t have and was blow away by what I heard. Their ‘S/T’ LP/CD was an absolute monster! A 12 song epic from start to finish. Adding to the finely crafted licks on their Birdman-ish first single their ‘S/T’ album also finds them delving into Flamin Groovies, MC5 and Thee Hypnotics territory. Frickin riffs and hooks a plenty, I knew that the SONS OF CYRUS were something special. Following their ‘S/T’ LP/CD they released a hand full of phenomenal singles on rock n roll mainstays Savage, Fandango and Lonestar Records. Amongst these singles the SONS OF CYRUS began to broaden their musical horizons from just being a riff wankin bar rock band. They began taking cues from other more traditional rock n roll greats like the Pagans, Yardbirds, Lyres, Stones etc., and even delved into the poppiers aspects of rocks past which worked quite well for the band. These singles laid the ground work for their monolithic 2nd full length ‘Rock & Rollercoaster’ also released on Big Brothel Records. Another stellar release in the SONS OF CYRUS' flawless back catalog. Well, insert Dead Beat! After releasing the CD version of the Locomotions (who contain Loco and Topi from the Sons of Cyrus) debut full length, I began talking to Loco about finally releasing something on the label. Mind you this is almost 2 years after he sent me the first SONS single, but at long last it was looking like something would come totether. Well together it did, and I’m proud to give you the SONS OF CYRUS 3rd full length ‘Monkey Business’! This singles and rarities collection contains EVERYTHING the band has recorded excluding their 2 full lengths. This epic 20 song disc includes their essential 6 singles (‘Tired of this time’, ‘Switzerland’, ‘What to do’, ‘Nobody but me’, ‘A Lonesome boy’ and ‘The Warriors’), a song from the 1st demo, some of their incredibly hard to find comp. trax (BAM Magazine, PUNK released in 2000) and their two tribute trax (Nomads and a very competant Stones cover)! I don’t think there are many bands out their that understand the true spirit and feel of rock n roll, but the SONS OF CYRUS are certainly one them. ‘Monkey Business’ is in essence a retrospective and captures the band at their earliest, most primitive stage all the way up to the present. And from beginning to end, this disc just docements one of Swedens most talented contemporary bands! For fans of: the Preachers Kids, Hellacopters, Pagans, Reigning Sound, Dirtbombs, Saints, Flamin Groovies, Paybacks, Lucky Punch, Real Kids, Mullens, Radio Birdman, Rippers (Italy), Ghetto Ways, etc. |
