Unbeknownst to most people in the underground MAC BLACKOUT from the Functional
Blackouts / Daily Void has been writing and recording solo material for
years. He originally started writing as a solo artist in '97 when attending
the Herron School of art school in Indianapolis. But the hobby turned
into an obsession the more he wrote and the more he created. He moved
to Chicago in '99 and continued writing solo material before meeting Brian
+ Chris and starting the Functional Blackouts and later forming the Daily
Void. Many of the Functional Blackouts and Daily Void songs were even
written and recorded solely by Mac Blackout as MAC BLACKOUT originals
prior to being revamped and re-recorded for his other bands. Stellar Blackouts
tunes like 'In My Vacuum' and 'Gonna Get Cut' originally began as MAC
BLACKOUT solo originals that the Functional Blackouts later adopted, butchered
and re-recorded for the band. The same applies to the Daily Void, where
MAC penned tunes like 'Devil's Gold Window' and '(Surprise Surprise) You've
Lost You're Eyes' before the Daily Void reworked them into the Daily Void
set.
When MAC began home recording he was very active with print making and
painting. The writing and recording process, for MAC, was very similar
to painting, but just using a different "canvas" and resculpting
the different layers of sound to create songs. As he'd make these home
recordings he'd rip a few CDr's to pass out to friends and band mates
so they could check out what other material he was working on. Dr. Filth
from the Blackouts/Void kept telling me I gotta hear some of MAC's solo
material, so I talked to MAC and told him to send me some songs. After
hearing some of MAC's work I was absolutely dumbfounded that no one else
had talked to him about releasing anything. The thoughtfulness and creativity
of some of the songs on the CDr’s he sent me were nothing short
of brilliant.
So here it is, the debut 'S/T' LP by MAC BLACKOUT. Upon hearing the opening
track and all the way through songs like 'Baby Face Killer' and 'Delirium
Trim Man', you distinctly get the feeling that you're being let into the
world of something special. It has that DIY home recording feel to it
and the self created home made touch is really what makes these deeply
personal tunes shine. His songs really stand out because they don't really
sound like any other band. MAC BLACKOUT has a very unique way that he
writes and records, by varying tempos, guitar and vocal tones and using
self created clarinet, saxophone and electronic violin tracks that he
intricately layers into very cohesive, concise songs. You could loosely
lump what MAC's doing in with proto-punk, avante garde noise makers like
the Electric Eels, Screamers, and Chrome. And there's also traces of early
glammey Bowie and even Kraftwerk running through the album. But just lumping
MAC in with these other bands would really be doing these songs injustice
because they don't really sound exactly like any of those bands; and the
songs really do stand on their own. The track listing for this LP contains
the 12 strongest songs that MAC and I hand picked from the MAC BLACKOUT
vaults and I think it's a damn solid album from start to finish. I've
selectively included the MAC BLACKOUT original of '(Surprised, Surprise),
You've Lost Your Eyes' so the Daily Void fans can hear how the song was
originally written. It's a lot different than the track that I released
on the Daily Void LP/CD (DB 73), and equally cool to hear the original
version that gave the other Daily Void members inspiration to rework it
into a Daily Void tune.
For Fans of: Electric Eels, Blank Dogs, Chrome, early David Bowie, Factums,
Frustration, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, Daily Void, Haunted George, Jay
Reatard, Funtional Blackouts and Dead Hookers.
