The thing I like about JUANITA Y LOS FEOS is that they don't really immerse themselves in a genre. They take cues from various guitar based Back From the Grave howlers of yore and speckle their tunes with the keys heavy scree of bands like the Screamers and Devo; and the anthem-ey qualities of classic punk bands like the Avengers and Weirdos. They even throw in a few choice Flamencan guitar licks here and there as a subtle nod to their regional Spanish heritage. And the culmination of their characteristic genre-dabblings paired with their undenying, fervent delivery is what really sets JUANITA apart from the pack. One of the strongest members of the band is Juanita herself. She has a very fierce, yet electrifying voice that really makes the songs shine without sounding to cutsey. On a few of the songs she brings to mind Penelope Houston in that naively, intriguing sorta way. You know, how she sang way back when she was young and cool on that first Avengers album. I'm not saying that Juanita sounds exactly like Penelope, because she doesn't. But she has that same self confidant vocal spark that interplays perfectly with the rest of the band and really helps spit shine their rough n tumble garage nuggets. That certainly shouldn't undermine the rest of the band though because Rafa, Anibal, Angel and Fa Feo certainly have done their homework. All very proficient musicians who've defnately had their fair shair of alone time with their Oblivians, Germs, Devo, Gears and Spaceshits records. Together they make one fine blues based, crash n roll concoction, that many a Spaniards will vow a little sigh of disappointment knowing their special secret little "in" band is about to get thrust upon the masses. So here it is, in all it's tattered, treble heavy, mid fi glory ready for the world to enjoy. The ‘S/T' debut full length from JUANITA Y LOS FEOS packs 12 new and unreleased songs from Madrids newest bunch of rock n roll derelicts. Sung word for word in their native tongue, I think this album will resonate with any fan of blues drenched garage rock or keys laced punk rock. I haven't released a Spanish band in almost 10 years and leave it to JUANITA Y LOS FEOS to help reaffirm my faith in the Spanish music scene. This is probably a band you've never heard of, so if you're diggin any of the records I put out by bands like Live Fast Die, the Forbidden Tigers, Terminals, Intellectuals or Haunted George, you gotta here these guys. Total scorcher from start to finish here. For fans of: The Mans, Black Lips, Forbidden Tigers, Lost Sounds, Spaceshits, Teengenerate, Motorama, Haunted George, Hex Dispensers, Brimstone Howl, Live Fast Die, Cococoma, BBQ, Oblivians, Spits, Demon's Claws, Rearards, etc. |
